In celebration of The Bobbin's official status as an Art Hop Site, we held a fantastic Garden Party & Trunk show during Saturday afternoon. It was a spectacular sunny day in Burlington, the clotheslines were filled with sustainable fashions while local favs "Electric Halo" rocked the garden stage.
Living in Burlington, Vermont is a feast-for-the-ears if you are a music lover. From week-long Jazz Festivals, to free concerts in Battery Park, not to mention small clubs and coffeehouses (The Monkey House, Radio Bean) or just a stroll down Church Street, live music is everywhere! As a family of musicians and music lovers, we like to do our part- with the creation of CRAFT w/the Band!
CRAFT w/the BAND
is one of the Mamas all-time favorite events. An all ages show- with a
rare opportunity to talk and make art with the band between sets.
The
Bobbin Mamas were so super blessed to have our local (super)heros The
Smittens! spend a Saturday afternoon making friendship pins and music in
The Old North End.
"The
Smittens are a hard-working globe-trotting independent American twee
pop band from Burlington, Vermont who like to think of themselves as
friends first and open-hearted indiepop revolutionaries after that.
Max
Andrucki, Colin Clary, Dana Kaplan, Holly Chagnon, and David Zacharis
switch up instruments, song-writing, and singing to create brilliantly
lyrical and hyper-catchy pop songs of all shapes and sizes."
The Smittens are a global sensation adored from coast to coast. How incredibly lucky we are to have them as our friends and neighbors.
On a quiet Wednesday afternoon in May, The Bobbin Sew Bar + Craft Lounge hosted our favorite Midwestern band Prizzy Prizzy Please! for CRAFT w/the BAND. Juggle balls were stitched up and stuffed with beans, little dudes rocked out on guitar, drums & keyboards while a crafty fun dance party was enjoyed by all.
CRAFT w/the BAND is one of the Mamas all-time favorite events. An all ages show- with a rare opportunity to talk and make art with the band between sets.
Prizzy Prizzy Please! met while in Jazz Band together and their music is often described as "avant-punk/funk-fusion". Our kids thought they were "...completely AWESOME!" and "the BEST band in the WORLD!" Thanks to video clips, you can share in their enthusiasm.

The first meeting to establish an American Sewing Guild Chapter here in Burlington went quite well last month. While we decided against forming our own chapter, at this time, there was a lot of interest in creating an Greater Burlington Neighborhood Sew Club. The group will meet the first Thursday evening of every month from 7-9pm The goals of the group are to talk about sewing, show our sewing and encourage more sewing! If this sounds like you, or someone you love, mark your calendar and come on down! Our next meeting is -TOMORROW- Thursday, May 6th at: The Bobbin Sew Bar + Craft Lounge, LLC 299 North Winooski Ave @ Archibald Street Old North End - Burlington - Vermont 802-862-7417 http://thebobbin.com
Spotlight on Local O.N.E. Designer Derek Smith of "Wyrd Wheel"
The Bobbin is committed to highlighting the unique and diverse population of our Old North End neighborhood.
This month we are turning out spotlight to a new resident of our beloved 'hood Derek Smith -a gifted yarn spinner who recently arrived here from Northern California. Derek's Yarns are spun chunky in rich hand dyed earthy hues. The Bobbin Mamas, not unlike most VT knitters, are always super excited to get their hands on some fresh new yarns.
You can learn more about Derek and his passion for knitting with authentic eco-friendly fibers on our blog: The Bobbin Mamas Adventures in Eco Craft. (Click Here)
The Bobbin Sew Bar + Craft Lounge is pleased to offer a wide variety of green, vintage, upcycled and eco-friendly sewing, knitting + crafting supplies. Now including Derek Smith's handwoven, hand-dyed skeins of yarn at our local shop. Stop on by Tuesday-Saturday 11am-5pm

Always wanted a critter skirt or love bunny? Now is the time!
This past weekend I experienced an adolescent dream come true. Joe
Jack Talcum, of The Dead Milkmen fame, came to my little shop in the
Old North End of Burlington and played his music. The music and the
voice that I have been hearing in my head for decades! As an ostracized
angst-y arts-y teenager, I found community and friendship through the
words and music of Joe Jack Talcum. My 15 yr old self is so damn proud
of my 36 yr old self, it is astounding! I cannot believe that as a
grown up Mama business owner that I still have the opportunity to play
music and act like a "rockstar". With two musically inclined children,
I now have the additional pleasure of getting to rock out with my kids
and teach them the songs that soothed my teenage soul. What joy!
Super big Thanks to Jarmac, Eva, Rachel, Catherine & Michael for making all this happen.
‘Craft With the Band’
Saturday, June 6, at The Bobbin Sew Bar & Craft Lounge, Burlington,
2-5 p.m. $7 includes materials. Info, 862-7417. Joe Jack Talcum plays
the same evening at Gezellig Theatre, 8 p.m. - 1 a.m. $7. Tickets
available at Radio Bean and The Bobbin.
Sure, crafting isn’t just for grandmas these days, but does crafting ... rock? Absolutely, if the ladies at Burlington’s The Bobbin Sew Bar & Craft Lounge have anything to say about it. This Saturday, June 6, the Old North End studio and education center hosts Joe Jack Talcum of Philadelphia, founder and front man of irreverent late-’80s cult band The Dead Milkmen.
The guy behind "Bitchin’ Camaro" and "Punk Rock Girl" will join locals
for a few hours of "craftastic fun" using wood blocks to make prints
for flags and tags, according to the Bobbin’s flyer. They call it "Craft With the Band."
Bobbin co-owner Gyllian Svensson writes in an email
that this "is an idea that we’ve been working on at The Bobbin for a
while now; we were just waiting for the right act to really launch the
project." When local musician Jarmac T. Harvys told her Talcum was coming to play a show at Gezellig Theatre the performance space he runs with Radio Bean owner Lee Anderson Svensson suggested he stop by The Bobbin first. "Joe Jack was all for it, so the event was born," she says.
Will the singer get down and dirty with the printmaking? "I’m not
sure how much of a crafter Joe Jack is," says Svensson, adding that she "did ask for his input." She hopes to make Craft With the Band happen
several times a year.
Tickets for this one are going fast, but those who don’t snag them
may be able to catch Joe Jack Talcum playing with 17th Fire, Train
Wreck Kelly and Goldtown the same evening. Craft on!
